Most people associate dental braces with our Houston pediatric dentist's patients, but adults can–and should–wear braces as well if they have a malocclusion. A malocclusion is defined as a “bad bite” due to an overbite, underbite, crossbite, or crooked teeth. Many dismiss the need for braces and think that dental braces treatment is purely cosmetic, so it’s not necessary. However, although wearing braces will create a dramatic change in your physical appearance for the better, the main reason people need braces is because an untreated malocclusion leads to other health problems.
If a malocclusion isn’t corrected, this inevitably leads to other problems, such as migraines, tooth decay, gum disease, speech impairments, and difficulty chewing and digesting food. At our Houston cosmetic dentist, we offer both traditional metal braces and Invisalign Clear Aligners in order to prevent these problems. Which method we recommend for your treatment depends on your specific case, but here is how they compare.
Metal dental braces are the traditional (and most common) type of braces treatment that we recommend. This is because metal braces work on virtually all types of cases, from severe to mild. They used to be the least desirable, but today they are much thinner and lighter in weight than they used to be, making them more appealing for those who have refrained from straightening their teeth because of their prior bulkiness.
Invisalign Clear Aligners are clear, as their name suggests. These are custom transparent trays that fit over your teeth and, through the course of treatment, will be switched out in order to gradually push the teeth to the correct position. When it comes to this method of straightening the teeth, however, it is most effective for mild cases. Additionally, it requires extra discipline to ensure your aligners aren’t lost, misplaced, or worn less than our cosmetic dentist recommends. That said, they are a subtle and more flexible option for adults who would prefer not to wear metal braces.
If you’re an adult wanting to straighten your teeth for a radiant, healthy smile, then please book an appointment with us. We will complete an orthodontic evaluation in order to determine the best course of treatment.
