At our Houston cosmetic dentist, we offer dental bridges and dental implants among other various cosmetic dentistry treatments. Although both replace missing teeth in adults, they are designed differently and are recommended to our patients as a treatment for different cases. In this article, we will explain the difference between a dental implant and a dental bridge, as well as when our Houston cosmetic dentist might recommend either treatment.
Getting a dental implant involves a surgical procedure in which we implant a titanium post into your gum line. This post acts as a new root for the false tooth that will be placed once your gums have had time to heal and fuse with the biocompatible metal post.
Once the post is healed, we will attach a special connecting piece known as an abutment, which will connect the titanium post to a dental crown or a dental bridge in order to restore the appearance of your smile.
A cosmetic dental bridge does not involve a surgical procedure, which means there is no titanium involved. They do, however, involve a porcelain or plastic artificial tooth that is held in place by an abutment and the healthy teeth on either side of the artificial tooth.
There are several factors that we take into consideration when determining whether you are best suited to a cosmetic dental implant or a cosmetic dental bridge. Some of these factors include:
Everyone deserves a winning smile they are proud to show off. If you are missing any teeth, please book an appointment with our cosmetic dentist so we can assess your smile, understand your needs/preferences, and educate you about your options so that, together, we can determine the best solution for you.
