Frequently Asked Questions About Houston Cosmetic Dental Bridges

Dental Bridges, although a common and very safe procedure our Houston cosmetic dentist offers, are rather unknown to many patients until we tell them they may be an ideal candidate. Here are some of the most frequently asked questions we receive about dental bridges.

What are Dental Bridges?

A dental bridge is a fixed restoration we offer. If you are missing some teeth, they bridge the gap between remaining healthy teeth. They are made up of prosthetic teeth, which we refer to as “pontics”, and they are held in place by dental crowns. Once fully healed and your mouth has adjusted, they look like your natural teeth.

Who Can Benefit From Dental Bridges?

Patients who are missing any teeth are immediately considered for bridges. We often recommend bridges to those of our patients who need significant teeth replacement after they have fallen out due to decay. In other cases, some patients have had to undergo dental extraction as a result of excess decay so that the rest of their teeth could be saved.

What Are the Pros and Cons of Dental Bridges?

In addition to filling a gap caused by missing teeth, installing dental bridges also ensures you can still eat and speak comfortably. It also prevents your healthy teeth from shifting and protects your facial structure.

When missing teeth aren’t replaced, this will often result in what is known as facial collapse, which occurs when your face droops down because the teeth aren’t in a position to be able to hold it upright. Facial collapse can manifest as pouches of sagging skin in the sides of the mouth, crooked lips, eye bags, and an overall aged appearance.

In order for the bridge to fit properly, some of the affected tooth may need to be shaved down. For those who have excess decay, they won’t mind, but for patients whose neighboring teeth are healthy, the idea may be unpleasant. If that’s the case, dental implants may be better, but we will take your needs and preferences into consideration when making a final treatment recommendation.

How Long do Dental Bridges Last?

If you keep up an optimal dental hygiene routine, your dental bridge will keep looking natural and should last well over 10-15 years before touch-ups may need to be completed. Dental bridges do require a special flossing technique, but our cosmetic dentists and hygienists will teach you how to best care for your teeth and bridge.
