Is Invisalign The Right Treatment For Your Houston Teenager?
Victory Smiles News
Over the last few years, Invisalign has gained traction as a popular method for correcting the alignment of patients' teeth and jaws. For a while, very few dentists offered Invisalign treatments and instead decided to focus on traditional braces. Nowadays though, plenty of Houston dentists offer Invisalign treatments in addition to braces. So, if both treatments are offered, is Invisalign the right treatment to undergo, or are braces the better alternative?
The Difference Between Braces and Invisalign
Braces have been the main form of treatment for teeth and jaw alignment for many decades. When undergoing treatment with braces, your Houston dentist will regularly tighten the patient's metal wires to guide their teeth to the correct position. There is also some initial discomfort, but it doesn't last long.
Invisalign, on the other hand, involves no wires. Invisalign aligners are much like clear plastic retainers that are made by completing a 3D scan of the patient's mouth. Using that 3D scan, the dentist will make different aligners to aid in moving the teeth through a series of small steps until the correction is complete.
The Pros and Cons of Invisalign Treatment
Perhaps the biggest pro of Invisalign is that it is barely noticeable. Because the aligner trays are clear, no one actually realizes that a patient is undergoing any treatment at all. This is perfect for the teenager who prefers a more subtle treatment. Another factor that makes it so appealing is that the patient can remove the trays for mealtimes. A third pro is that, compared to braces, there are much fewer consultations needed, since the aligners are already made.
As for the cons of Invisalign treatments, a major con is that patients need to be careful not to lose or misplace their clear aligners. Another con that can be off-putting is that the ability to remove the aligners during meals means that the patient needs to be extremely disciplined, as Invisalign needs to be worn strictly for 20-22 hours a day. Patients need to make sure they thoroughly brush their teeth after each meal because food particles can put unnecessary stress on the aligners, making it harder for the teeth to move where they need to.
