Invisalign Versus Metal Dental Braces

Did you know that around 45% of kids need some form of orthodontic treatment to address issues of alignment and malocclusion? Within that percentage there are different levels of treatment, from mild to severe. For that reason, our Houston pediatric dentist offers a variety of dental braces options, two of which are metal dental braces and Houston Invisalign. The best choice for you or your child depends on a number of factors, such as orthodontic needs, lifestyle, and age. Keep reading to learn the differences between metal dental braces and Houston Invisalign in order to better understand our Houston dentist decides the best course of treatment for each patient.

Houston Metal Dental Braces, Explained

Metal dental braces are a common course of treatment with our Houston family dentist due to their versatility and effectiveness. They can treat even severe alignment issues and are a cost-effective option for many patients, which makes them very popular. They work by employing a series of wires of brackets, the latter of which are affixed to each tooth. Our Houston family dentist then threads a wire through each bracket and tightens it periodically to gradually shift teeth into their proper position. Thanks to modern technology, metal dental braces are more streamlined and comfortable than in decades past, making them an ideal option for teens and adults alike.

Houston Invisalign, Explained

For those desiring a more discrete option, Houston Invisalign is also available through our Houston dentist. These clear plastic aligners are worn throughout the day to move teeth into the proper position, but can be removed for eating, drinking, and oral hygiene routines. Because they are composed of a clear material that fits over the teeth, they are practically invisible to others, hence the name. Houston Invisalign is not recommended for all patients, however. Some severe forms of malocclusion may not respond to Invisalign treatment. Additionally, our Houston pediatric dentist does not recommend Invisalign for younger patients who may be prone to losing their aligners or forgetting to wear them for the required 22 hours per day.
