Myths and Facts About Treating Our Houston Pediatric Dentist Patients With Fluoride
There is much speculation surrounding the use of fluoride in dentistry. Some believe it is harmful and will lead to long-term defects, while others believe it is perfectly harmless. In this post, we will address a few myths about fluoride and state the facts.
Myth #1: Fluoride Does Nothing For Your Teeth, So It Puts You At Unnecessary Risk
Fact: Both kids and adults need fluoride for healthy teeth because it prevents cavities and strengthens your teeth. In some cases, it may even reverse early-stage tooth decay. We place great importance on fluoride for children who are in the process of losing their baby teeth, as this ensures their permanent adult teeth emerge strongly and healthily. If it was unsafe or did nothing for your teeth, our Houston dentist wouldn’t offer it.
Myth #2: Children Who Drink Fluoridated Water Or Use Fluoridated Toothpaste Will Develop Dental Fluorosis
Fact: Dental fluorosis is a condition that causes streaks and discoloration in the teeth. We understand why parents may be concerned, but this only occurs when children deliberately misuse fluoride. The amount of fluoride in water is meant to be extremely low because we constantly drink it and fluoridated toothpaste only poses a risk if children intentionally eat/swallow their fluoridated toothpaste. Accidentally swallowing tiny amounts of toothpaste may happen, but at this amount, it is absolutely harmless.
Myth #3: Fluoride Is Unnatural
Fact: Fluoride comes from Fluorine, one of the most commonly found elements in the earth’s crust. It naturally occurs in minuscule amounts in most water sources as well as several foods, including grapes, raisins, spinach, and potatoes.
Myth #4: Fluoridating Water Is Expensive
Fact: The process of fluoridating water simply increases the amount of fluoride already present while remaining safe for consumption. Fluoridation is not an expensive process; in fact, it costs less than treating tooth decay. Our municipal water supply in Houston has very little fluoride in it, but regularly drinking it can gradually and safely strengthen your child’s enamel.
Our Houston Kids Dentist Recommends Fluoride For Healthy Teeth
When kids drink fluoridated water and brush their teeth with fluoridated toothpaste, they actively strengthen their enamel, which acts as a shield against decay. In order to further strengthen your child’s teeth, we also offer fluoride treatments with their pediatric teeth cleanings. If you would like to learn more about fluoride treatments, please book an appointment with us so we can examine your child’s teeth.
