Risks Associated With Wisdom Teeth After Dental Braces

Tooth extractions may sound intimidating, but this is a procedure we successfully complete on a regular basis with ease. Our Houston dentist patients commonly undergo tooth extraction if we diagnose them with impacted wisdom teeth. In this article, we will explain what wisdom teeth are and what risks are associated with them if you’ve had dental braces before.

What Are Wisdom Teeth?

Here’s some background: a wisdom tooth is also referred to as a third molar. These days, some humans may have anywhere from 1-4 wisdom teeth, or none at all. As humans, we once needed those extra molars to eat properly, but these days, they are unnecessary and can, instead, compromise your dental health.

Wisdom teeth typically appear between the ages of 17 and 21, but in some cases, wisdom teeth appear in our Houston pediatric dentist patients when they're 13 or 14 years old. If wisdom teeth have not yet appeared by 25, chances are they never will.

Why Does Our Houston Cosmetic Dentist Extract Wisdom Teeth?

The main reason why we recommend extracting impacted wisdom teeth is that they can easily cause damage to the neighboring teeth by:

  • Causing cysts: impacted wisdom teeth are trapped beneath the gums and make an attempt to emerge. Because of this, it is possible for a patient to develop painful cysts.
  • Crooked teeth: impacted wisdom teeth tend to make adjacent teeth crooked as they try to make room in your mouth to fully emerge, which causes a chain reaction that results in a complete shift/crookedness in your teeth. If you’ve completed your metal braces or Invisalign treatment, crooked teeth are the LAST thing we want for you.
  • Tooth decay: it’s no secret that crooked/crowding teeth are hard to keep clean because it becomes more difficult to brush and floss between all teeth, and it’s no secret that poorly cleaned teeth make you more vulnerable to cavities and gum disease
