Teen smiling and holding Houston braces options: metal braces and Invisalign

Which Houston Dental Braces Are Right For You?

Our Houston cosmetic dentist recommends braces treatment to children and adults who suffer from overcrowded or crooked teeth, as well as other issues pertaining to teeth alignment. Braces have a number of cosmetic and health benefits that make this treatment very common, especially during a patient’s teenage years. But many parents who are familiar with the clunky metal braces of their youth may be unaware of the different, more modern options available with our Houston pediatric dentist. Here, we’ll explain the different types of braces offered at our Houston cosmetic dentist’s office so you can decide which one is right for you or your child.

Different Braces Options Offered by Our Houston Dentist

The first step in determining which type of Houston dental braces are right for you is learning how they compare to one another. Our Houston dentist offers these types of braces for you or your child:

Metal Braces

Houston metal braces are made up of a combination of metal brackets and wires. Our Houston cosmetic dentist affixes the brackets to each tooth’s surface and then connects them with a metal wire. In order to shift teeth into the proper position, our Houston pediatric dentist will tighten that wire periodically, applying specified pressure to the teeth and jaw.

While Metal dental braces are noticeable, they are very effective at correcting nearly every level and type of alignment issues in both children and adults. Plus, they have become far more streamlined and less pronounced over the years. Proper braces hygiene is imperative, however, to prevent food particles and plaque to build up around brackets and under wires, causing cavitiies.

Ceramic Braces

Houston ceramic dental braces are similar to traditional metal braces, but are composed of clear or tooth-colored ceramic, making them much less noticeable. These braces still use brackets and wires that are adjusted in order to move crooked teeth into a straighter line over time. They are more expensive than traditional metal braces, but are just as versatile in their ability to treat even severe misalignment or crowding issues.

Invisalign

Those who want a nearly-invisible Houston braces option, should consider Invisalign. This treatment involves wearing a series of clear, plastic aligners that gradually shift your teeth into the correct position. They are a great option for older patients and those less severe alignment issues. While this treatment option tends to be more expensive, it is becoming one of the most popular since the aligners are practically invisible. That said, the aligners must be worn at least 22 hour/day in order for the treatment to be effective, but must also be removed while eating or drinking. That means our Houston pediatric dentist recommends younger patients be responsible enough to keep track of their aligners or else metal braces may be a better treatment option.
