Comparing Metal Braces and Invisalign Offered by Our Cosmetic Dentist in Houston

Many of our Houston patients prefer to rely solely on traditional metal braces because they are a tried and true method for correcting malocclusions. Invisalign is another viable option, but we recommend this method for only certain cases. If you are planning to get braces for yourself or for your child, then this blog will prove useful for comparing the two methods.

Traditional Metal Braces

As their name implies, metal braces are the most traditional method for correcting a bad, poorly aligned bite. They consist of brackets, which are bonded to the teeth with a dental-quality glue. These brackets are the little squares you see on the teeth of anyone wearing dental braces. They also consist of an archwire, which is placed across the brackets in order to gradually pressure the teeth to move toward the position our cosmetic dentists desire for your teeth. In some cases, we may also incorporate rubber bands later in your treatment.

Metal braces work for virtually any and all cases of poorly aligned teeth, including the simplest and most complex cases.

Invisalign Clear Aligners

Invisalign Clear Aligners are made of thin, clear plastic. Every few weeks you receive a different set of aligners from our Houston cosmetic dentist, which are shaped a tad bit differently each time. This is done so that your teeth will gradually shift to their correct, straight position.

Despite their initial doubt and criticism when Invisalign Clear Aligners first emerged, this method has proven to be effective in more mild cases. If you or your child are very disciplined and your teeth alignment isn’t severe, then you may surely be able to handle the added responsibility Invisalign requires.

When it comes to Invisalign, patients must wear their aligners for 20-22 hours a day, as directed by our dentists. They may take them out when it’s time to eat, but must remember to put them back on and not misplace them or lose them. Because of this, many patients who may benefit from Invisalign may decide to wear metal braces instead since they don’t run the risk of misplacing them.
