Our Houston Cosmetic Dentist's Advice On Cavity Prevention

Our Houston cosmetic dentist sees many children and adults alike with cavities. Although cavities are more commonly associated with children, adults can still get cavities due to a variety of factors. In either case, cavities are preventable. In this article, we will offer our recommendations for how both adults and children can prevent cavities so everyone can have a winning smile!

Brush Your Teeth Twice A Day Or More

A basic factor of good dental hygiene is how often you’re brushing your teeth. Brushing your teeth once in the morning and again at night before bedtime is a great start to achieving a cavity-free smile. We also recommend brushing your teeth with a fluoridated toothpaste, as many studies have shown that fluoride strengthens the enamel and provides extra protection against cavities.

If you are a dental braces patient, we tend to recommend you brush your teeth more than twice–usually after every meal and snack. Not only does this ensure you don’t have unsightly bits of food stuck in your braces, but this also provides extra protection against cavities, since braces (especially metal dental braces) are notorious for trapping food without patients realizing it.

Floss Every Night Before Bed

Flossing is an absolute necessity, but many of our patients say they don’t floss because it hurts or because it causes them to bleed. However, did you know that if you bleed while you floss, this indicates that you don’t floss enough and/or that you may be suffering from gingivitis? This is because, by not flossing, you’re letting plaque build up in between your gums, causing swelling and pain.

Get Regular Dental Cleanings At Our Houston Dentist Office

Our last recommendation for keeping your smile cavity-free is to get regular dental cleanings at our Houston cosmetic dentist office. We recommend you visit us for a professional cleaning and dental check-up every 6 months, but if we find that you are suffering from gingivitis, we may need to see you more often until we can clear it up.

By getting regular dental cleanings, you will get a far deeper cleaning than you would at home. Further, our Houston dentist will be able to examine your teeth for any illnesses or issues that need to be addressed and treated in a timely manner. We will also proceed with x-rays once a year so we can catch signs of cavities.
