Teeth Whitening For Teens At Our Houston Cosmetic Dentist

Today, more and more companies seem to pop up on social media that advertise their new teeth whitening products. However, if you read our post about store-bought teeth whitening kits, then you’ll know we recommend that you stay away from them. Now, that isn’t to say that you should avoid teeth whitening altogether, especially if your teen has come to their semiannual cleaning with us and asked if they could whiten their teeth. You and your teen will be glad to know that yes, it is possible for teenagers to undergo teeth whitening treatments at our Houston cosmetic dentist office, but there are a few things to keep in mind.

When Can Teenagers Start Whitening Their Teeth?

Although it is more common to see adults who have undergone in-office teeth whitening, it is actually perfectly safe for teenagers to get their teeth whitened as young as 13 years old, so long as all of the permanent, larger adult teeth have emerged and settled. We recommend waiting until this point because, by then, the nerve endings are also larger, which helps reduce sensitivity.

Further, if your teen is a metal dental braces or Invisalign patient, it is important to wait until after their treatment has concluded so as to ensure their teeth are evenly whitened.

How Teeth Whitening For Teenagers Works At Our Houston Cosmetic Dentist Office

If your teen wishes to undergo teeth whitening soon, you can expect treatment to only last one session in most cases.

First, we will assess any sensitivities your teen suffers from and/or any prior dental work they have had. Then, we will discuss how much whiter they want their teeth to be. Although for most patients the goal is to get the whitest teeth possible, we may or may not recommend this. Some patients will do just fine with the whitest teeth, but others may prefer to go a few shades less so as not to cause any long-term sensitivity. Rest assured that when you get teeth whitening treatments done by our Houston cosmetic dentist, treatment will be fully customized with their comfort and health prioritized!

Our Houston Cosmetic Dentist's Advice On Cavity Prevention

Our Houston cosmetic dentist sees many children and adults alike with cavities. Although cavities are more commonly associated with children, adults can still get cavities due to a variety of factors. In either case, cavities are preventable. In this article, we will offer our recommendations for how both adults and children can prevent cavities so everyone can have a winning smile!

Brush Your Teeth Twice A Day Or More

A basic factor of good dental hygiene is how often you’re brushing your teeth. Brushing your teeth once in the morning and again at night before bedtime is a great start to achieving a cavity-free smile. We also recommend brushing your teeth with a fluoridated toothpaste, as many studies have shown that fluoride strengthens the enamel and provides extra protection against cavities.

If you are a dental braces patient, we tend to recommend you brush your teeth more than twice–usually after every meal and snack. Not only does this ensure you don’t have unsightly bits of food stuck in your braces, but this also provides extra protection against cavities, since braces (especially metal dental braces) are notorious for trapping food without patients realizing it.

Floss Every Night Before Bed

Flossing is an absolute necessity, but many of our patients say they don’t floss because it hurts or because it causes them to bleed. However, did you know that if you bleed while you floss, this indicates that you don’t floss enough and/or that you may be suffering from gingivitis? This is because, by not flossing, you’re letting plaque build up in between your gums, causing swelling and pain.

Get Regular Dental Cleanings At Our Houston Dentist Office

Our last recommendation for keeping your smile cavity-free is to get regular dental cleanings at our Houston cosmetic dentist office. We recommend you visit us for a professional cleaning and dental check-up every 6 months, but if we find that you are suffering from gingivitis, we may need to see you more often until we can clear it up.

By getting regular dental cleanings, you will get a far deeper cleaning than you would at home. Further, our Houston dentist will be able to examine your teeth for any illnesses or issues that need to be addressed and treated in a timely manner. We will also proceed with x-rays once a year so we can catch signs of cavities.

Our Houston Cosmetic Dentist Is Here To Give Everyone A Winning Smile

Now that you’re ready to achieve a cavity-free smile, please book an appointment with us so we can complete a dental cleaning and assess the health of your teeth. We will answer any questions you have and give you more detailed advice on how to best prevent cavities. We look forward to giving you a winning smile!

How To Best Care For Your Houston Dental Implant

Once the process of getting a dental implant at our Houston cosmetic dentist office is finalized, patients need to take proper care of them. In this article, we will break down how to best take care of your dental implant.

When Our Houston Cosmetic Dentist Recommends Dental Implants

If you’re a patient with a missing tooth, we will typically treat you with cosmetic dental implants. In addition to providing cosmetic benefits to your smile, dental implants are also restorative due to the fact that they help prevent bone loss and facial collapse. Our high-quality dental implants also enable patients to chew and speak in a way that feels almost as natural as prior to losing any teeth.

How To Take Care Of Your Houston Dental Implant

The following are essential habits you need to keep in order to care for and maintain your dental implant so it lasts for years to come.

Brush Your Teeth With a Soft-Bristled Toothbrush

It’s no secret that you should brush your teeth twice a day in order to promote good dental health. When you have a dental implant, we recommend switching to a soft-bristled toothbrush (if you don’t already use one) because these are gentle on the gums and the crown while effectively removing food particles and plaque. You can use either a manual toothbrush or an electric toothbrush, but be sure to ask our Houston cosmetic dentists to find out what they think will work best for you.

Use A Non-Abrasive Toothpaste

In addition to a soft toothbrush, it’s a great idea to use a gentle toothpaste that will preserve the integrity of the implant. Be sure the toothpaste you use does not include harsh ingredients like baking soda or hydrogen peroxide, which are both common in whitening toothpaste.

Floss With Implant Friendly Dental Floss

Whether you have a dental implant or not, flossing nightly is essential to good gum health, but this is especially critical if you wear dental implants because your gums need to be in optimal condition in order to keep the implant in place. Make sure you use unwaxed floss, dental implant floss, or dental crown floss. These all succeed at getting into hard-to-reach spots and removing the plaque underneath the porcelain crown. By keeping your gums clean and healthy, you won’t risk an infection.

Regular Dental Cleanings

We recommend you visit our Houston cosmetic dentist at least twice a year, though some patients require more frequent visits. Regular cleanings allow us to check up on your dental health as a whole, as well as how the dental implant is holding up over the years.

Our Houston Cosmetic Dentist Is Here To Ensure You Always Wear A Winning Smile

If you have had dental implant surgery or plan to get dental implants soon, please book an appointment with us so we can evaluate the health of your teeth. We will gladly address any concerns and offer guidance on keeping your teeth healthy.

Our Houston Cosmetic Dentist Offers Invisalign For Adults

In addition to our metal dental braces, our Houston cosmetic dentist also offers Invisalign for those who could benefit from subtle dental braces treatment–including adults. In this article, we will discuss how Invisalign Clear Aligners work and why we recommend them to adults who are in need of mild correction in the alignment of their teeth.

How Does Invisalign Work?

As with any dental braces treatment, our Houston cosmetic dentist will begin with an orthodontic consultation in which we assess your bite. After we determine that Invisalign is right for you, we’ll take impressions of your teeth and map out the course of your treatment with our advanced technology.

Next, we give these materials to the team at our dental lab so they can craft your Invisalign Clear Aligner trays. You will wear one set of trays for a few weeks at a time, switching to the next set every few weeks. Over time, the plastic will gradually shift your teeth to the correct position.

Why Our Houston Cosmetic Dentist Recommends Invisalign To Our Adult Patients

Here are the different reasons why we are proud to offer Invisalign to patients.

Invisalign Is Barely Noticeable

As its name suggests, Invisalign is nearly invisible due to the fact that it doesn’t utilize any wires, brackets, or o-rings. This makes it highly attractive to adults who would prefer to avoid drawing attention to their smiles.

Invisalign Gives Patients More Freedom

Unlike our metal dental braces, Invisalign Clear Aligners can be removed by the patient–and they should be at mealtimes; just be sure not to lose or misplace your trays. However, for Invisalign treatment to work, your trays must be worn at least 22 hours a day. If you do this and keep up good dental hygiene, then you may be able to skip the aligner trays on a special occasion.

Invisalign Is Highly Effective

Though once dismissed as being too weak compared to metal braces to make any change in the alignment of the teeth, Invisalign Clear Aligners have proven to be effective at correcting the bite, especially if your bite isn’t a severe one.

Get Evaluated For Invisalign Clear Aligners At Our Houston Cosmetic Dentist Offices

Invisalign provides our patients with plenty of benefits and a winning smile! Houston Cosmetic Dental Veneers FAQ

Dental veneers are a very common procedure we offer at our Houston cosmetic dentist office. A rather quick way to transform your smile, porcelain veneers are highly sought after, but there are still some questions surrounding them. In this article, we will answer some of our most frequently asked questions about cosmetic dental veneers.

1) What Are Dental Veneers?

Dental veneers are very thin shells made of porcelain that are bonded to the front surface of the teeth. Once placed, they immediately give you a straighter, whiter smile.

2) Are Dental Veneers Only Available In Porcelain?

Cosmetic dental veneers are made out of porcelain or composite–which is what we use for cavity fillings because they resemble the natural color of your teeth. However, our Houston cosmetic dentist prefers porcelain because of its impressive durability and bright white color.

3) Who Might Benefit From Porcelain Dental Veneers?

As mentioned before, dental veneers are known to completely transform your smile because they cover up any flaws your teeth might have. If your teeth are very stained, cracked or misshapen, or have any gaps, our dental veneers are remarkable for concealing these flaws so you have a winning smile you’re proud to show off.

4) What Is The Process Of Getting Dental Veneers?

You can expect dental veneers to require two visits to our Houston cosmetic dentist office. On the first visit, we will shave down your teeth ever so slightly so they fit perfectly behind your porcelain veneers and take some impressions of your teeth. At the second visit, we will place the veneers on you and perform some touch-ups to make sure they fit perfectly over your teeth. After this second visit, your smile is instantly improved, so have fun showing it to the world!

5) Are There Any Drawbacks To Getting Dental Veneers

With how transformative porcelain veneers are, many wonder if there’s a catch. If you decide to get dental veneers, be mindful that:

  • Once we shave down your teeth, this is irreversible
  • Your natural teeth are still behind your veneers, so be sure to keep up a great dental hygiene routine to keep your teeth healthy enough to support the veneers
  • Although porcelain veneers are very strong, cracks or breaks will result in the need for new dental veneers
