When Should Kids Get Dental Braces With Our Houston Dentist

Dental braces are a large part of the care our Houston pediatric dentists offer because we know that dental braces are essential for good dental health and a healthy bite. Prior to getting dental braces, parents often ask our Houston kids dentist what age their child needs to be. Here’s what we recommend.

Don’t Wait Until Adulthood to Get Dental Braces

Although anyone can receive dental braces treatment at any time between childhood and into adulthood, we recommend taking advantage of the fact that your child is still growing, as this makes their braces treatment go by a lot smoother. This is because children’s mouths and heads are still growing, so their teeth are, too, which makes them more moldable.

That said, we recommend inquiring about dental braces treatment for your child between the ages of 8 and 14 because, at this age, kids should have lost most or all of their baby teeth. However, there is some wiggle room in this window. For example, if your child has a severe malocclusion (bad bite that requires braces), and we determine that treatment will take 3 years, you may wish to start their braces treatment at age 10 so that they can be done with their dental braces treatment by age 13 or 14. On the other hand, if their bite isn’t as severe, it's okay for them to wait a little longer.

Ask Our Houston Pediatric Dentist About Braces Early On

We take great pride in being your entire family’s dentist for life. As soon as you think dental braces might be an option for your child, we recommend bringing them in for a dental braces consultation. This consultation can take place as early as the age of 7. Our trained Houston kids dentist will be able to determine how metal dental braces or Invisalign will help correct your child's teeth.

What Causes Yellow Teeth?

Do you find you have a hard time smiling because you’re embarrassed about not having bright white teeth like all of the celebrities do? Do you feel like this insecurity is stopping you from living the happy life you deserve? If so, you’re not alone. There are many causes that may contribute to yellowing teeth, but thankfully our Houston teeth whitening can help.

What Causes Your Teeth To Turn Yellow?

As we age our teeth tend to get yellow, but aging isn’t exactly the direct cause of yellow teeth. Instead, it is the following that we do over the years that cause our teeth to take on a yellow hue:

Weakened Enamel

Enamel is naturally white and it is the strongest, outermost layer of the tooth. As children, our Houston pediatric dentist may notice that your teeth used to be whiter due to the strength of your enamel and the fact that you haven’t had as much time to damage it. When enamel is damaged and weakened, the underlying dentin, which is darker yellow in color, is exposed. After many years of damage, the enamel may be so worn that the dentin is primarily noticeable, at which point many of our Houston cosmetic dentist patients may opt for in-office teeth whitening.

How do we weaken our enamel? Simply by consuming acidic drinks and foods, such as sodas, sugary sweets, citruses, and starches, and smoking.

Tannins Stain Our Teeth

As an adult, you are far more likely to enjoy beverages such as coffee, tea, and wine, but unfortunately, all of these beverages contain tannins, the ingredient that is most responsible for yellow teeth.

Tannins are actually good for you because they act as antioxidants, which aid in improving your overall health. However, consuming these beverages too much will likely cause yellow teeth.

Our Houston Cosmetic Dentist Offers In-Office Teeth Whitening For Teenagers And Adults

Although there are tons of over-the-counter products that help whiten your teeth, they don’t last long and may do more harm than good. By seeking in-office teeth whitening with our Houston cosmetic dentist, you ensure that your teeth are safely whitened because we take into account any sensitivity or prior dental work you may have gotten done, which makes it easy for us to fully customize your teeth whitening treatment.

If you would like to whiten your teeth so they look strong and healthy again, then please book an appointment with our cosmetic dentist. We will discuss your desired results, how to achieve them, and how to ensure you can show off your white smile for longer.

Who Should Get Veneers At Our Houston Cosmetic Dentist Office

Dental veneers are one of the most common procedures our Houston cosmetic dentist patients choose to undergo. The veneer procedure itself is rather quick and simple and our patients get to show off their new stunning smile immediately. This article will explain what dental veneers are and who is a great candidate for them.

What Are Cosmetic Dental Veneers?

Dental Veneers are placed on your tooth’s surface as a thin shell. Many of our Houston cosmetic dentist patients favor them because they effectively hide any dental imperfections you may be concerned about.

How Are Cosmetic Dental Veneers Placed On The Tooth?

Getting porcelain dental veneers usually takes two visits with our Houston cosmetic dentist.

At your first appointment, we will help you determine what shade your dental veneers should be in order to boost your confidence and give you a natural, healthy appearance. Next, our highly skilled and trained cosmetic dentist will have to shave down your teeth ever so slightly in order to ensure they easily fit behind your veneers. Sedation dentistry isn’t usually necessary, but we still offer it to help our patients feel all the more comfortable when getting their dental veneers. Lastly, we will take impressions of your teeth and then send them to our dental lab.

When you come back to our Houston cosmetic dentist office a couple of weeks later, we will have your custom veneers ready for placement. Once placed, we’ll check your bite and make any necessary adjustments to ensure a perfectly comfortable fit.

Who Should Get Dental Veneers?

Now that you know more about dental veneers, do you think they’re right for you? According to our Houston cosmetic dentist, if you experience any of the following then your smile could be completely transformed by our cosmetic dental veneers:

  • Excessive discoloration of your teeth
  • Disliking the shape of your teeth (small, jagged, uneven, etc)
  • You’ve chipped a tooth
  • You have unsightly gaps in your teeth

How To Pick A Suitable Houston Pediatric Dentist

With so many dentists available throughout the Greater Houston Area, we understand it can be a tough decision to pick one for yourself and your family, so here are some tips our Houston pediatric dentists have on how to pick the right pediatric dentist for your child.

Look Into Licensed Pediatric Dentists

Many dentists advertise that they are pediatric dentists because they welcome kids into their offices. Although general dentists are allowed to see kids, it’s important to note that children may require different care than adults. Dentists who are licensed to practice pediatric dentistry took their education a step further by taking extra time to specialize in pediatric dentistry. Pediatric dentists must first graduate as general dentists, but if they wish to specialize in pediatrics they must continue their education with a residency program where they learn about child psychology, development, pharmacology, specific sedation techniques, how to care for children with special needs, and more. Following their training, they must become licensed to practice pediatric dentistry. By seeking Houston dental care from a licensed pediatric dentist, you can rest assured that your child receives only qualified, high-quality dental care.

Emphasize The Importance Of A Compassionate Dentist

Many dentists are rather closed off to their patients and just focus on performing the necessary treatment, but compassionate dentistry puts the patient’s comfort before anything else. At Victory Smiles in Houston, our kids dentist prioritizes our patients at all times–especially because children may be very young when they first go to the dentist. Young children can be anxious and restless, and if a child has special needs, comfort and cooperation are very difficult to achieve. Because we practice compassionate dentistry, we base all of our patient relationships off of trust and warmth and we help ease children’s fears by taking the time to talk with them in a friendly manner and get to know them. We’ll also walk children and their parents through their expected treatment and ensure they feel safe and welcome in our office.

Victory Smiles Is Your Go-To Houston Kids Dentist

Finding a suitable pediatric dentist is a challenge, but at Victory Smiles, we take great pride in our exceptional dental care thanks to our unmatched compassion and our advanced training and licensing. If it’s time for your child’s biannual teeth cleaning, please book an appointment so we can meet you and your family. We look forward to meeting you and being your number one choice for pediatric dentistry!

How To Maintain White Teeth After Teeth Whitening At Our Houston Cosmetic Dentist

Getting your teeth whitened is exciting, especially because now you’ll have the smile that you have always dreamed of. However, with this new smile comes more maintenance. To make sure this cosmetic procedure is worth it for you, you will need to take really good care of your new smile so it stays vibrant and white for a long time. Here is what our Houston cosmetic dentist recommends to prolong the bright whiteness of your teeth.

Don’t Veer Away From Your Daily Teeth Cleaning Routine

Our Houston cosmetic dentist recommends using a fluoridated whitening toothpaste to brush your teeth twice a day, followed by flossing every night before bed. These steps are essential to healthy teeth and maintaining a white smile.

Avoid What Caused Your Teeth To Turn Yellow In The First Place

Now that you’ve whitened your teeth, it’s important to understand what made them yellow in the first place.

Enamel, otherwise known as the outermost surface of your teeth, remains white when it’s strong and healthy. When it weakens and wears down, though, it exposes the underlying dentin, which is naturally yellow. Weakened enamel is what makes your teeth yellow, and the enamel becomes weakened as a result of eating and drinking acidic foods and beverages.

Beverages such as coffee, tea, and wine are notorious for staining and yellowing your teeth because they contain tannins. Tannins are naturally found in plants, and although they have health benefits, they, unfortunately, reduce the whiteness of your teeth.

Because these beverages do offer some health benefits, you shouldn’t have to cut them out completely, but our Houston cosmetic dentist does recommend reducing your consumption and consider drinking tea and coffee through a straw. This way, your teeth don’t make as much direct contact with the tannins.

Keep Seeing Our Dentist For Your Bi-Annual Dental Cleanings

This is important regardless of if our Houston cosmetic dentist performed a teeth whitening procedure or not. However, those who came to our cosmetic dentist for teeth whitening can certainly benefit from our routine cleaning. At your cleaning, we will gently polish the teeth in order to get rid of surface stains.

Our Houston Dentist Will Help You Keep Your Teeth In Check

Cosmetic teeth whitening will eventually fade no matter what, but following these guidelines will help your white teeth last longer. If you would like to come in for a teeth cleaning or start another round of teeth whitening treatment with our Houston cosmetic dentist, then please book an appointment so we can brighten your teeth.
