Cosmetic dentistry encompasses a wide range of elective dental services and procedures, all with the goal of improving the appearance of your teeth and giving you a more attractive smile.
There are many types of cosmetic dentistry, including but not limited to the common procedures named below.
Teeth Whitening
While at-home treatments are available over the counter, our cosmetic dental professionals have access to higher-grade whitening treatments that can achieve optimal levels of whitening with minimum discomfort. These procedures are quick, painless, and have instant results.
Cosmetic Veneers
Made of composite materials or porcelain, veneers are thin shells are individually created to match the size, shape, and color of the rest of your smile, then permanently bonded to the front surfaces of your natural teeth. This is generally a conservative treatment; however, prior to application, your dentist may need to remove a thin layer of enamel from the front of your tooth to create an even, natural smile.
Crowns and Caps
Similar to veneers, crowns (also known as caps) are permanently secured to your natural teeth to alter their appearance. However, a crown completely encases the tooth and will require a much greater reduction of your natural tooth. Although crowns are a more aggressive treatment, they are both aesthetic and functional in protecting your original teeth, and thus are more likely to be covered by insurance.
Tooth Reshaping
Reshaping may be recommended to correct small chips in teeth. By gently filing away thin layers of your tooth enamel, your dentist can make minor adjustments to the size and shape of your teeth, resulting in a more balanced, proportionate smile.
Dental Bridges
A permanent alternative to dentures, dental bridges fill in gaps where one or multiple teeth are missing. False teeth called “pontics” are secured between anchored crowns to create a non-removable appliance. The bridge may be supported by either your own natural teeth or by implants.
The above list is by no means comprehensive - our Houston dentists offer many more services that can help improve and enhance your smile. Call our office today to schedule an appointment.
In the past, most dental fillings were made with amalgam (silver) due to its durability and lower cost. However, amalgam fillings are losing favor in the dental industry for various reasons.
Today, we're seeing a shift in the dental industry toward composite tooth-colored fillings. These require less preparation and removal of enamel, and they blend well aesthetically to the rest of the existing tooth.
