What is Tongue-tie?
Tongue tie most frequently affects infants and toddlers. It occurs when the frenulum, or thin band of tissue under the tongue, remains attached. This restricts the movement of the tongue, leading to a “tongue tie.”
Symptoms
The effect that ankyloglossia has depends on its severity. Symptoms show up early on in infancy. Most often, breastfeeding mothers notice that their child struggles to latch and feed. However, other problems may develop as well. Some of the most common issues include:
- Difficulty speaking
- Breathing challenges
- Painful breastfeeding
- Difficulty chewing or swallowing
If you notice any of these symptoms in your child, they may be suffering from tongue tie. The earlier they come in for treatment, the quicker they can resolve the problem and improve their eating and speaking!
Tongue-Tie Treatment
While tongue tie can be disruptive, the good news is that it’s easy to fix. A simple surgery, called a frenotomy procedure, is the key to restoring oral health. We simply remove the extra tissue, freeing the tongue. This resolves the symptoms above and helps kids continue proper oral development.
The procedure may sound intimidating, but it is quick and painless. The dentist uses local anesthesia if necessary, but in many cases, it’s not needed. Using surgical scissors, the dentist clips the frenulum and frees the tongue.
Most of the time, infants who have the procedure can immediately latch and feed afterward!
