The American Dental Association recommends that children have their first dental appointment by age 1 (earlier if they get their first tooth before then). Preparing kids to visit the dentist can be a challenge, much like taking them to the doctor or getting their first haircut.

The new experience, strange noises, and unfamiliar smells can make the dentist a scary place for young patients. Taking some time to prepare them before their first dental visit can make a huge difference.

Keep in mind that kids feed off our emotions. If you emit anxiety about the dental visit, your child will also feel this way.

Instead, keep a positive attitude about children’s dental care. Educate your child on what the appointment will include, and reassure them that it’s a safe environment. You may find a children’s book on the subject to be a helpful guide!
